When does then ELDT Rule take effect?
Beginning February 7, 2022 entry-level drivers will have to complete an approved ELDT program before taking skills tests for the commercial drivers license (CDL).
What if I am upgrading from a Class B to a Class A?
You must complete an approved ELDT program for an upgrade too.
How many hours are required for the ELDT?
There is no hourly requirement for ELDT training. However, there are proficiency requirements for both behind the wheel (BTW) and theory training that must be meet before you can advance to testing for the CDL.
What are the theory topics that I have to learn for the ELDT?
There are about 30 topics that the federal rule requires you to take training on. These include shifting, night driving, hours of service, backing, etc. You will be tested and must score at least an 80% on each ELDT topic.
What driving skills are required by the ELDT?
The ELDT requires that every driver be proficient in specific driving skills include backing skills, as well as street driving. An approved training provider must do the range and road training and determine whether your skills are proficient.
To be eligible to take the Class A or Class B CDL skills test, the S or P skills test, or the H knowledge test, commercial driver’s license (CDL) applicants must have completed applicable entry-level driver training from a registered training provider. The type of training required depends on the type of license or endorsement for which the driver is applying.
